Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that encourages the body to promote natural healing and improve function. It involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. Acupuncture works by creating an opening of the blood vessels, allowing more blood, oxygen and nutrients to reach the site of injury. Acupuncture is used to reduce chronic pain and to balance the body by stimulating its own healing resources. In addition to treating pain, acupuncture is also helpful in treating internal conditions such as digestive disorders, fertility, anxiety and much MUCH more.
What to Expect
During your initial evaluation, the acupuncturist will review your history and current symptoms, then discuss an appropriate treatment plan needed to improve your condition. We will discuss your overall health and review your medical history. Questions are asked about your current symptoms and any treatment you’ve received so far. Any written diagnostic test results that you have (i.e. MRI’s, CT Scan’s X-Rays) would be beneficial to bring. I recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to receive acupuncture treatment (i.e. tank top, shorts, loose jogging pants). In addition you will receive your first acupuncture treatment.
The acupuncture procedure is quick and relatively painless, you’re in and out of the office within 30-40 minutes.
The number of treatments you will need will vary based on your specific condition, current symptoms as well as the amount of time you've had it. The Acupuncture process is repeated 2-3 times a week until maximum improvement is seen. A maintenance regimen is often prescribed to prevent recurrence which can be as little as 1-2 times per month.
Acupuncture can result in a complete absence of symptoms, even in severe pain conditions that have been present for years. Your relief may be immediate or delayed up to 48 hours. Relief may last for a few hours to days after the first session and longer after the following sessions. It is not uncommon to experience a short-term flare-up of symptoms as your body resets itself. Any side effects will be discussed at the time of your visit.
Focusing on your health and committing to a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take to maintain your overall well-being. Even after your symptoms are resolved, acupuncture can assist you in maintaining your health, and possibly prevent future imbalances.
